Sean Riley's presentation to the 4:33 Club in March, "Music and Altered States of Awareness", was so well received, we have invited him back. In this presentation, Sean will explore how and why our brains interpret only some of the myriad sounds we hear as music. He will explore the borders between musical and non-musical perception, and how these boundaries are affected by the bodies we inhabit and the particular cultural practices in which we are engaged. His presentation will help us to deepen our engagement with both music and the sonic environment.
Composer Sean Kiley is pursuing a PhD in Music Composition and Psychology through the interdisciplinary program at the University of Victoria.
Of Sound Minds is grateful to be able to gather for this event in “Shiya’hwt” / “SYOWT”, on the unceded, traditional and ancestral territories of the SENĆOŦEN and HUL’Q’UMI’NUM speaking peoples. Our organization foregrounds the act of listening, including the importance of listening, learning and unlearning in the practice of Reconciliation.
