As a long time SaltSpring resident, I have enjoyed being involved in our very active artistic community in a variety of ways. In both my teaching career and composing activities, I have always been called to push traditional boundaries.
Inspired by Canadian composer and educator Murray Schafer, my students and I expanded our aural horizons by experimenting with sound in various ways to create personal and interpersonal communication. Being part of the Of Sound Minds collective, investigating the wide range of possibilities and types regarding generative sound has been interesting and provocative.
When Gertrude Stein, an innovator and explorer in her own medium of words, was chosen as the focus for a special event, I was inspired to transform some of her written words and stylistic strategies into music and create a new work – and yet and yet still t/here - premiering at this Time for Stein event.
